What is it like, to work with Emery?
Michael Shawe, LCSW
Emery has helped me transform my life. I cannot speak highly enough of her skills and talent. Starting a business is daunting and she always had a supportive and sage approach to the obstacles I faced along the way. I would say that in large part due to her, I accelerated my practice growth to a point where it likely would have taken me 5-7 years to attain in just under one year with her. She knows all of the logistical pieces to get you off of the ground from marketing to navigating the complexities of working directly with clients. She has encouraged me to value my skills appropriately and that alone has literally doubled my salary. She both acknowledges where I am and pushes me to see possibilities in the future. She is completely adaptable to my style of operating. She is willing to workshop whatever we are working on to make whatever idea we’re implementing fit me. So many programs try to put me in a box that suits the creator’s style. Emery met me where I was and encouraged me and now I’m a thriving and successful private practice owner.

I am so happy with the process and the results of meeting with Emery for private practice mentorship! Emery has a profound way of bolstering your confidence with her grounded and clear guidance. I was able to get my specific questions answered, reduce my own anxiety about taking next steps, and even expanded my practice so I could help more clients along the way. Emery guided me in the process of hiring therapists and even provided document templates for me to utilize. I highly recommend Emery Mikel for both Licensed Creative Arts Therapists and other mental health providers who are wanting to open a private practice or grow their current practice. I will continue to work with Emery as I take new steps in evolving my career. Thank you again, Emery, for all that you do!

Emery has a warm and yet professional demeanor that invites collaboration. She is generous in giving her time and knowledge. I have learned a great deal about the process of creating and/or engaging in private practice as a licensed creative arts therapist in the state of NY. Most significantly, the tremendous effort she put into coordinating and facilitating the annual Water and Stone Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) Conference is applaudable. This is one of the most down-to-earth, yet professionally competent CAT conferences I have had the pleasure of attending and presenting at. Emery is also dedicated to inclusivity and keeps costs affordable to professionals, students, and non-CATs. Highly recommended!

Leaving graduate school there was an obvious gap between what my education had prepared me for and the demands of practicing art therapy in the “real world”. Emery’s supervision was an integral part of navigating that transition. Participating in her supervision group helped me to process my experiences in a supportive space, encouraged me to explore my identity as a therapist, and gave me the opportunity to build a professional network of badass art therapists.
Once I had become fully licensed and was ready to expand the focus of my professional goals, I again found Emery immensely helpful. She was there to provide feedback about new opportunities, teach me about the business of private practice, and give me the opportunity to present at my first conference.
When I think about why I am so eager to recommend Emery as a supervisor it boils down to the fact that she is an emotionally healthy individual who takes a “rising tide lifts all boats” approach to her work.

I started doing some consultation with Emery after reading her book The Art of Business and being completely inspired. Her writing style in the book spoke to me, as did the content so I knew I wanted to reach out. I'm so glad that I did! Emery's approach to mentoring/consulting is extremely clear and has really helped me organize what I truly need to do and focus on in order to move forward with my goals. I've truly enjoyed how she's provided me with specific tasks to work on in each call. It has kept me focused and inspired. In addition, Emery is easy to talk to and keeps everything casual and real while being completely professional. I am so glad that I reached out to Emery and I plan to continue working with her throughout the process of creating and beginning my own art therapy contract work.

Emery has been a mentor to me for the past 3 years. Getting help and working with Emery was a pivotal moment for my career as a creative arts therapist. I work with her as a mentor as well as attend her supervision groups. As a private mentor, Emery has been amazing at working with me at a pace I can keep up with while still moving me forward with my goals. In supervision, I get not only her expertise, but the opportunity to connect with other therapists. Now that I am working in a private clinical setting I am positive that reaching out to Emery was one of the best decisions I made.
